Annual Report 2015-16

Distinguished guests, respected parents, my dear colleagues and students,

I have great pleasure in presenting this report before you. Our college is one among the prestigious Teacher Education Colleges directly run by the University of Kerala and established in 1990. The famous Kottamkulangara temple and Punnamada Lake- venue of Nehru Trophy boat race are nearby. Though the college is within the town limit of Alappuzha Municipality, the tranquil and the serene atmosphere prevailing around the college promotes teaching and learning alike.

The college reopened on 1st July with a total strength of fifty students. One student left the college on personal reason and the present strength is forty nine. Five optionals viz, Malayalam, Hindi, Mathematics, Physical science and Natural science were present for two years B.Ed course. Prof. Jacob Mathew, former Principal left the college on 12-7-2015 and I, Dr.Renuka Sonny L.R. had joined as a new Principal of the college on 13-7-2015. The faculty consists of nine teachers and principal and eleven members of non-teaching staff.

Sri. Sagar (Asst. Professor in Visual and Fine art) was transferred to KUCTE Kollam & Sri. Vinodan Pilakal had joined in the college on 21-8-2015. Smt. Shimitha Kumari S (Asst. professor in Perspective in Education) was transferred to KUCTE Kunnum and Smt. Hima from KUCTE Kunnum had joined duty to fill the gap. Smt. Yamuna had joined as guest faculty in our college. Sri. Anoob had joined as Asst. Professor in Physical Education on 7-1-2016.

College Development Committee (CDC)

College Development Committee general body meeting was conducted on 22nd July 2015 and executive members were elected. The committee was formed on the guidelines laid by the University. The executive committee consists of Dr. Renuka Sonny L.R., the Principal as President/ Tresurer, Sri. Antony (Vice President), Sri. Peethambaran (Auditor), Smt. Jaya N.R. (Secretary), Smt. Lathika, Smt. Sharee Mohan, Smt. Judith Vincent, Smt. Deepa Thankappan, Smt. Shyja J.L, Smt Shimithakumari S(Members). Smt. Shimitha Kumari S was transferred to KUCTE Kunnum and instead of her Smt. Hima had joined as a new member. The college development council frequently met to discuss matters related to the college. Dr. Thomas Issac, Hon’ble MLA has sanctioned Rs.90 lakhs for constructing a building with four classrooms. The paper works are in progress. The development fund is being utilized for adding more instructional materials to suit with the NCTE norms. The college utilized CDC fund for the following works:

constructed a path between two buildings in the terrace,

painted college signboard in Talavadi junction,

subscribed journals in the library,

purchased microscope in the science lab, computer modem in the office etc,

installed anti-virus in 15 computers, internet security etc,

repaired bathroom,

purchased medicine and materials for first aid,

repaired laptop, microscope, photocopier machine, water filter, computer, motor, college bell, generator etc,

Maintainance of building,

Purchased halogen bulbs in the auditorium for Visual & Performing arts,

Exchanged broken tiles into new one in the general hall & teacher’s room,

Purchased steel glasses for community living camp etc.

Academic activities

The two year B.Ed course with four semester was introduced from this year. We start the days academic work with morning assembly in the ground on Tuesday and in the general hall on other days. The class time was from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. The teachers sincerely engaged the classes uninterrupted and did justice to their duty.


In the 2013-14 B.Ed examination, our students secured 95% pass with 2nd position, 6 distinctions, 183 first class and 5 second class. Archana Krishna of Natural science bagged second position in the university level. Merit day was organized to honour the top scorers of the academic session 2013-14.


Sri. Hari Gopinath, Overseas English Training Centre, Ernakulam conducted orientation programme on communicative English. Sri. Pramod D, Life skill trainer, Thiruvananathapuram conducted life skill training programme. A financial awareness programme was conducted by Kerala Gramin Bank, Alappuzha in the college auditorium. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Mercy Diano Mazido, Municipal Chairperson, Alappuzha in the presence of Regional Bank Manager, Gramin Bank. Many people from different parts of Alappuzha also participated in that function. World hand wash day was conducted by Believers church English Medium School. Avalookunnu, Alappuzha in our college. They conducted demonstration class on proper hand washing. They also conducted quiz competition related to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on the same day. Sri. Noble, BRC Trainer, Alappuzha took class on National Curriculum Frame Work. Yoga classes were taken by Sri Chandrasenan, Yogacharyan. Physical Education class was taken by Sri. Praveen, Assistant Professor, SAM College of Education, Poothotta, Ernakulam. Sri. Padmanabha Swamikal delivered a lecture on ‘ Value education’ ‘Clean campus, Safe campus’ programme was conducted by Kerala Police, Alappuzha in our college. They organized exhibition cum awareness programme about drug abusement, ill effects of drugs etc.

Co-curricular activities

College union was inaugurated by Smt. Mercy Diano Mazido, Municipal Chairperson, Alappuzha Municipality, Art club was inaugurated by Prof. Jacob Mathew instead of Sri. Dileesh Nair, Cine Director and sports club by Sri. Kalavoor N Gopinath, Former National Volley ball player. After that students were participated in variety entertainment programmes. The union took initiatives in organizing and celebrating Independence day, Hiroshima day, Teacher’s day, Onam, Gandhi Jayanthi day, X’mas, Republic day etc.

X’mas, Onam, Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations

X’mas and New year was celebrated in a befitting manner on 5th January 2016. The chief guest Father Johnson Puthenpurackal, St.Peter’s church, Vattayar, Alappuzha delivered the Christmas message. Students presented x’mas carol, skit etc. Cakes were distributed.

Onam was celebrated on 21st August 2015. Athapookalam, onam sadhya, onakalikal like musical chair, Tug-of-war etc were organized.

Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated on 2nd October 2015. Programmes like Bhajan, exhibition, essay writing competition, quiz competition, campus cleaning etc conducted. Kappa, chutney, chukku kappy etc prepared and served in that day.

Study tour

The study tour was conducted. Smt. Shyja J.L, Smt. Deepa Thankappan, Smt. Jaya N.R, Sri. Vinodan Pilakal, Smt. Alli Anirudhan, Smt. Saija S.R and Sri. Anoob were accompanied the students. They visited Tenmala, Deer park, Butterfly park , Palaruvi etc.

Annual atheletic meet

Annual Athletic meet was held on 6th February 2016. Dr. Ansari, Asst. Professor in Physical Education. M.S.M.College, Kayamkulam took salute from the March past. Muhammed Shafeek and Tiffania Beegum declared as men’s champion and women’s champion. Tagore house secured overall championship and Gandhiji house secured I runner up in the meet. Mr. Anoob, Asst. Professor in Physical Education took much pain to make the event a grand success. I am thankful to Arjun, Sports club secretary, full participation and leadership of the union members and staffs during the atheletic meet.

Literary & Arts festival

Literally and Arts competitions were conducted under the guideline of Sri. Vinodan Pilakal, Asst. Professor in Visual & Performing Arts. It was creative and interesting. Students belonging to three houses namely Gandhiji, Tagore and Aurobindo actively participated in all the competitions held. Smt. Mariamma Thomas, Headmistress, Govt. H.S. Aryad inaugurated the arts festival. A procession was also conducted from college campus to N.S.S. Karayogam Library.

Release of Magazine

College magazine 2015-16 ‘Spadikha chimizil neela mazhiyude marukara’ was released by Dr.Ajayakumar, Asst. Professsor, S.D. College, Alappuzha. The cover was designed by Sri. Vinodan Pilakkal, Asst. Professor in Visual & Performing arts of our college. Miss. Lineesha K. Mohandas, student editor took much pain to make the magazine in a colourful way. I am thankful to Smt. Saija S.R. Staff Editor of the magazine.


Alumni was conducted. Students from various academic year assembled . They shared their sweet memories of the college days. The cultural programmes were conducted on that day.

Community Living Camp

Community Living Camp was conducted from June 13th – 18th 2016 at college auditorium. Camp was inaugurated by Sri. Thomas Joseph, Chairman, Alappuzha Municipality and Keynote Address by Sri. Varghese Perayil, Syndicate Member, Convenor of KUCTEs, University of Kerala . It was felicitated by Sri. Sabu K.A,.Ward Councillor, Punnamada, Smt. Parvathy , Ward Councillor, Kottamkulangara , Sri. Antony P.A, CDC Vice President, Smt. Mariamma Thomas ,Head Mistress, Govt. H.S.S. Aryad ,Sri. T. Jimmy George, Head Master, Govt. L.P. School & Smt. Deepa Thankappan, Asst. Professor in Hindi & Staff Advisor. Afternoon session handled by Dr. V. Reghu Former HOD, CACEE, University of Kerala & Faculty Head &Dean ( Rtd), Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for Youth Development, Sreeperumpathur, Tamilnadu, Govt. of India on the topic ‘Communication’. State seminar on World Environment Day was conducted in the second day. It was inaugurated by Dr G. Nagendra Prabhu, Principal Investigator, P.G.Dept. of Zoology & Research, S.D.College,Alappuzha and handled a class on WONDERS FROM WEEDS. Afterthat Dr.Shiburaj Sugathan,Senior Scientist, Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute, Palode,Tvpm delivered a topic on SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION. Then presentation of papers and deliberations on papers presented. Afternoon session was handled by Dr. Lali.S, Principal, Chinmaya Vidhyalaya, Alappuzha on the topic ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND NATURE CONSERVATION. The valedictory session was inaugurated by Sri. K. Suresh Kumar, Principal, Govt.H.S.S, Aryad, Alappuzha and distributed certificate to the participants.In the third day Ms.AnjuLekshmi S, School Counsellor, Govt. H.S. Mannancherry, Alappuzha delivered a class on COUNSELLING. Fire & rescue service, Alappuzha conducted mock drill and gave awareness in the afternoon session. In the fourth day BIO-VEGETABLE CULTIVATION class taken by Sri. Ajith, Agricultural Officer, Krishi Bhavan, Purakkad. After that Dr. Jayesh, Senior Medical Officer, Dist. Ayurveda Hospital, Alappuzha took class on LIFE STYLE DISEASES. Afternoon we visited Old age home, Santhimandiram, Alappuzha and beach. At night an environmental short film shown “Bhoomikkuru charamageetham” based on O.N.V. Kurup’s poem. After that Nadanpattu and campfire were conducted. A procession was conducted in connection with World Environment day from college campus to Thalavadi Junction. Different medicinal plants and pamphlet related to protection of environment were distributed to the people nearby college.

Students participated in various competitions/workshops outside the college

Students of our college Muhammed Shafeek & Amili Antony bagged second prize in quiz competition and Sajid Hussain got third prize in poster competition in connection with ozone day conducted by KUCTE, Kayamkulam on 15th September 2015. Eight students participated in competitions such as pencil drawing, painting, essay writing & elocution in wild life celebration conducted by Social Forestry Office, Alappuzha on 1st ,2nd October 2015. Gandhian vision workshop (residential) conducted by Centre for Gandhian studies and Public relation Dept. Kerala at Gandhi Bhavan Trivandrum. Five students were participated on 3rd, 4th, 5th October 2015. A workshop was conducted by the Malayala Manorama, Alappuzha on personality development. Five students were attended on 10th October 2015. Four students (two teams) participated in intercollegiate quiz competition conducted by St. Theresa’s College, Ernakulam on 30th October 2015. Lineesha K.Mohandas bagged third prize in Malayalam versification (certificate and cash prize of Rs.1000/-) and Vrida and team bagged third prize in Folk song (certificate and cash prize of Rs.500/-) in connection with ‘Coir Kerala 2016’, Alappuzha.
